However, what could be heard was birth humming—a technique in hypnobirthing to use during labor."

For many, Christmas is a time of magic and miracles, and what could be more magical than the arrival of a new baby? As a hypnobirthing instructor, I’m often asked about tools that help mums-to-be stay calm and manage labour naturally. One of my favorite techniques to share is birth humming—a powerful, calming tool for breathing through surges (or contractions).

What Is Birth Humming?

Birth humming is a gentle, low-pitched hum or tone that you make during a surge. It helps you focus on your breathing, stay relaxed, and ride the wave of each contraction. The vibration of the hum also creates a soothing, grounding sensation that connects you to your body and baby.

Unlike holding your breath or tensing up—which can increase discomfort—birth humming encourages relaxation and promotes oxygen flow to both you and your baby.

How Does Birth Humming Work During Labour?

  1. Encourages Rhythmic Breathing: Birth humming naturally slows your breath, keeping it steady and rhythmic. This helps you stay calm and focused, even during intense surges.

  2. Creates Vibrations for Relaxation: The low hum produces gentle vibrations that can ease tension in your body. It’s like giving yourself an internal massage with sound.

  3. Promotes a Calming Environment: Humming not only helps you stay calm, but it can also create a peaceful atmosphere for your birth partner and support team.

  4. Distracts From Pain: When you focus on making the sound, it redirects your attention away from the intensity of the surge.

  5. Supports Oxytocin Flow: Relaxation and calmness during labor encourage the production of oxytocin, the hormone that drives labour and helps progress it naturally.

How to Use Birth Humming in Labour

  1. Start with Deep Breathing: As you feel a surge begin, inhale deeply through your nose for a count of 4, and exhale slowly through your mouth for a count of 6.

  2. Add the Hum: On the exhale, create a low hum. Let the sound resonate in your chest, like a soothing vibration. Think of it as a gentle “hmmmm” sound.

  3. Focus on the Sensation: Pay attention to the vibration and how it feels in your body. This focus helps keep your mind calm and centered.

  4. Repeat as Needed: Continue birth humming through each surge, returning to natural breathing in between.

Tips for Effective Birth Humming

  • Find Your Tone: Experiment with different pitches to discover the tone that feels most calming and resonates well in your body.

  • Practice Before Labour: Like any hypnobirthing technique, practice is key. Try birth humming during Braxton Hicks contractions or even during a yoga session to build confidence.

  • Combine with Affirmations: Pair your humming with positive affirmations like, “I am calm, I am strong, I am in control.”

  • Involve Your Partner: Encourage your partner to hum along with you—it creates a deeper connection and can help you feel supported.
